About S.J. Khalsa
For S.J. Khalsa, the essence of estate law isn't found in dry legal texts or lifeless documents. Rather, it is found in the application of estate planning techniques to accomplish some of the most fundamental missions in society-fortifying families, protecting legacies, and ensuring that the dreams parents have for their children are not lost to taxes because of poor planning or procrastination. Mr. Khalsa takes the time to get to know you as an individual, to learn about your hopes and preferences; to understand what makes you comfortable and what makes you most proud about your life and family. That's the foundation. He then combines a superb mastery of the law with his 25 years of legal experience to create an estate plan that's not only technically airtight, but is animated by your spirit and the values that define you-your work ethic, your devotion to your family, and your generosity. Adding an extra dimension to this expertise, Mr. Khalsa is a recognized authority on the special planning needs of parents of children with mental disabilities. He is also skilled in assisting his clients in the reduction of income and capital gains taxes, as well as estate taxes.

Experience
Mr. Khalsa has been in private practice in New York since 1974. Over the years, his areas of practice have included business and commercial matters, the rights of the disabled, nonprofit organizations and education law, in addition to a wide range of estate planning specialties, including: Living Trusts, Asset Protection, Charitable Trusts, Family Limited Partnerships, Business Succession Planning, and trusts for children with special needs. A member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys, Mr. Khalsa also belongs to the American, New York State and New York County Lawyers Bar Associations. He is president of the Sikh Lawyers Bar Association and sits on the Board of Directors of the Asian American Bar Association. Mr. Khalsa is an active arbitrator in the New York City courts and has been nominated for the position of Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York. He is admitted to practice in Colorado and New York, the U.S. District Courts in both states, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He served as an aide to the late United States Senator John Sparkman.

Education
Mr. Khalsa earned his Juris Doctorate from the Washington College of Law at the American University in Washington, D.C., in 1971. He received his bachelor's degree in marketing and business administration at the University of Alabama.

Personal
Mr. Khalsa and his wife live in Manhattan; they are parents of two grown children and are grandparents. Active in his religious community, Mr. Khalsa has raised millions of dollars for charities nationwide. He often represents the Sikh religion at interfaith gatherings, and is an active member and past director of the International Human Rights Organization.
